Soooo Predictable

I've been thinking about my artwork and style lately. I feel like my stuff is becoming too predictable. Whenever I look at my drawings I can't help but think I've drawn that face, expression, hairstyle, or pose before. Take this "sitting girl" for instance. I just realized her face is similar to this girlie I drew last year. sheesh! I think it's about time I mix things up a bit. Hopefully my next post will be less predictable.

This is something i did for school. It's a modern take on the fairytale "The 12 Dancing Princesses" I originally miscounted and had 11, so I had to add the 12th at the last minute. heh! That should explain the headless girl on the far right. The dresses were done with photos of fabrics from a magazine. Sorry for the poor quality in these. It was too big to scan and my camera sucks!

This was a little Oekaki from the other night

great stuff Kristen. I don't see your stuff as being predictable at all really. I know what you mean though about feeling like you're drawing something you've drawn before. I think in your case they feel similar because the expressions are the same. That's all! Keep it up! Now that your busy week of school is over, let's see some more stuff for the book!!!

What a great school project! It turned out fantastic!!! That's rigth I gave it 3 exclamations. :) Love your simple shapes, the patterned dressed and the dancing. The swinging chandelier is a nice touch.

The oekaki girl is fab!!! I love that teal color with the black.

You and I both need to snap out of whatever mental funk we are in.

I went through a time when all my faces looked the same too. Even when I was trying to do something totally different. So, I gave up on drawing for about 3 months and didn't really do anything at all. I'm just starting to get back to picking up the pencils again, and I managed to work out a whole new piece last weekend. I'm trying to get back to doing more cartoony type stuff, I did too much with the realistic type stuff when I was playing around with fantasy art. If you would like to take a look at my cartoon, I posted it on my blog last night, and any comments or critiques would gladly be welcomed from anyone.

Scott: Thank you. I seem to draw that same expression ...a lot! It's those half circle eyes, straight nose, and the frowny mouth thing. yeesh! So, I have one more final this week then I'm done. wheeee! I can't wait to start drawing more stuff for the sketchbook. I think the hardest part will be not posting everything I draw :P

Gary: Hey Thank you! I get a bit nervous when I post school stuff! I usually hate the crap I do for illustration class. This was the first project I actually liked. (probably because it was one of the only things I got an A on) :P I agree We've gotta get outta this Funk! I wish I still lived in Arizona. We could have had a sketchbook session.

Shaggy: Wow! You stopped drawing for 3 months? Well, I'm glad to hear you started drawing again. I'm in the same boat as you, I'm trying to go back to the cartoony stuff too. Thanks for the comment! :)

One thing wrong with not drawing for so long was I was so completely bored out of my skull. But that was one of the reasons I took a break because I was getting bored with it, and nothing i was trying to create was coming out resembling anything that could be called good. And thank you for visiting my page.

I think of your work more as instantly recognizable than repetitive (which I don't find it to be at all). And that 12 Dancing Princesses piece......maybe be my favorite thing I've seen from you yet. It's definitely up there.

Luke, Shaggy, Dean, and Andrew: Thank you very much for the comments. I'm feeling better about this 'Predictability Problem' <--- Say that 3 times in a row as fast as you can!

Thank you for the kind words.
